When George W. Bush was elected president in 2000 he probably
had no idea of the troubles that would fall upon his
administration. The events of September 11, 2001 changed
America indefinitely from the inside. The events that
followed 911 would change the way the rest of the world viewed
America from the outside. George W. Bush's administration
was bold and misused the mandate that the world provided to
capture the people responsible for 911. Iraq became the
focus based on what is now considered by most people that are
honest about the war, as faulty intelligence that was questionable
even before the war began. There was no "real" urgency to
enter Iraq. It was a bad decision. The decision once
made and carried out left patriotic America with a choice of
cutting loses and lose the war or to finish it. America did
the right thing in the end as painful as it is for the families
that lost their loved ones, we stayed the course and won.
The dilemma that disturbed Americans that once supported President
Bush is that they knew they had to stay the course throughout the
war even after they realized that the entire war in Iraq was based
on lies and propaganda. Many of those independent thinkers
did not vote for the GOP in the 2008 election. It wasn't that
McCain would not have made a great president. It is much
more that deep down many Americans felt betrayed and left out of
the wealth that was created at so many others expense. To
have to follow the party line that George Bush left in order to
gain the GOP nomination in the primaries makes it impossible to
win the presidency in the general election. McCain followed
the wrong president. Seven years
have passed and yes Saddam Hussein is dead, however the ones who
carried out the attacks and supported al Qaeda are all alive and
thriving in Afghanistan and Pakistan, the real battlefield on terrorism.
Ronald Reagan was right when many felt he was wrong. His
vision of trickle down economics was not fictional as many
democrats insisted. Tax cuts need to be tied to job creation
and when he gave his tax cuts America prospered for a generation
that followed.. George Bush chose two sets of tax cuts that
were not tied to job creation. Don't get me wrong they did
create jobs, just not in America. His tax cuts enabled the
wealthy to create jobs in other parts of world where labor is
cheaper. In the state of Ohio where almost a million jobs
have been lost since the year 2000, decided last night that a
continuation of George Bush's policies of tax breaks for the
wealthy with no guarantee of job creation was not the answer they
need from their presidential election choice. The global
economy is great for the wealthy but even they understand now that
when middle class America no longer is producing goods because it
can be done cheaper over seas you can't expect them to keep
buying. The final verdict is that when middle class America
are not buying houses, cars, and other goods the American economy
is in trouble no matter how much the government tried to deny
the dire situation. Last night America decided that Barack Obama's idea that tax cuts be tied to job creation rang in the
minds of Ohioans and other rust belt areas of the Midwest.
In the end the state of Ohio at around 9:30 decided that they were
going for Obama and change. At this point, many realized that
Barack Obama would win. It was not the GOP call of
"Drill Baby Drill" but the unemployed and suffering of the
country that said "Jobs baby Jobs". America trusts the newly
elected American President Barack Obama to do what he said he
wants to do. Get America working again through applying
changes that benefit the environment of middle class America.
They are the economy. They buy the cars, the houses, the latest
dvd players, TVs, computers, and every other product that drives
the American economy. To say the global economy has been
unkind to the working class in America is like saying that ebola
is a bad cold. The global economy has been a disaster for
middle class America. American companies can not use
expensive American labor and compete on the much cheaper
global labor market. It is even more ironic to expect the
ones who lost their jobs to continue to buy the products that were
made overseas. I have to think that globalization and the
American pursuit of happiness is not a good mix as long as global
labor prices are so far apart on the pay scales.
On energy, America understands that changes have to be made.
To expect a friend of oil to do anything to harm the profits of
big oil is a ridiculous notion and George Bush is the best friend
"Big Oil" has ever had. The oil companies are not the enemy
neither are the banks. The enemy is GREED, and that is
something that has crippled the American economy. Hopefully,
America can overcome the challenge of energy independence that
goes all the way back to the Nixon era. America can not
continue to allow billions of dollars to flow out of our
economy to foreign countries even if some are our friends (ie.
Mexico and Canada). We need to overcome foreign dependence
on energy.
In the end America chose a kinder friendlier leadership that at
the very least in these tough economic times was able to say the
words "I Care about Americans who are suffering". Is that
socialistic? I hope not.
The Choice
of President Barack Obama and What it Means
It is change in many ways. It is a giant
leap away from the ignorance of racism. To choose an
African American president for the first time as a result of
believing that his ideas and vision of America are better and
not based on the color of his skin is proof that
American democracy is stronger than ever. It took
approximately 43% of all white voters to elect Barack Obama.
This is a huge step considering that a little over 40 years
ago blacks were fighting for the opportunity to drink from the
same water fountain as whites. That they were not able
to sit where they wanted to on a bus but were instead ushered
to the back of it. Racism is wrong no matter what color
you are. I am just proud to be an American today.
The election of Barack Obama is not a sign of American
weakness abroad militarily. We are America and always have
and always will stand up to tyranny and terrorism no matter who is
our president. It is our mission as a nation. We will
lead the way as a partner in the world and not as big oil or
corporate sponsor. The words from his victory rally in
Chicago last night were moving. He made it clear that "To
those that would tear the world down, we will defeat you. To those
who seek peace and security we support you." He fulfilled
the creed of our country of proving once again that America is the
beacon of democracy, liberty, opportunity and unyielding hope.
America can change and has changed very much in the last eight
years. Change will come again over the next four years.
In the end America always has rallied to the cause. We are a
good people, a rare breed that lights up with ideas as if we we
were all children. We will take our black eye from time to
time, but in the end we always come back stronger and in a unified
way that only the freedom of America can create.
Godspeed
President Obama and the American people.
